Image Post Processing

Like anything else some after care work is required on our images. Often this information is important to know.

While as any good photographer knows, the best way to go about things is to get the image right in the first place. Unfortunately theory and practice rarely coincide. Our images in 99% of cases follow a standard post processing route.

Firstly there is no in camera sharpening. This is done so that 1) The image can be assessed first in Adobe Photoshop™. 2) Maximum flexibility is left to work with the RAW image.

Our monitors are calibrated with Spyder3 Elite™ And our general emphasis is on print output.

Images are first converted to 16bit before doing anything. In some cases exposure adjustments are made to the RAW image on loading into Adobe Photoshop™

Cropping is done to create an aesthetically pleasing image. Although on the whole we try not to crop too much so as to allow the end user "room to play around". Still there are times in the real world where junk needs to be removed and so on. The luxury to take the perfect picture on site is not always there. The image is also converted to 300ppi for print ready output.

Levels are adjusted, in most cases this is fairly straightforward, but in some cases can turn into a nightmare. White point is brought back to 244 in cases where this is appropriate. However it is still up to the end user to check these things for themselves.

A despeckle routine is applied to seperate RGB channels followed by a very light unsharp mask.

In rare cases some more serious editing may be required. This is generally done to remove problems, or to create the desired effect. However in general image editing is kept to as minimum a level as possible. This allows the end user greater flexibility, and on the whole it is a time consuming process. If you have specific editing requirements do contact us.

We keep all of our master raw images on file and have a seperate library for our distribution images and the photoshop psd files from which they were created. For a list of our equipment and what we use, see here.
