Equipment

Since we get asked. Here is a short overview of what we use. Without it turning into an advertorial. This is what we use and my reasons why.

Cameras. Canon™ Not that I would want to get into debates about which is best. Simply I have been using Canon™ since the mid eighties and they have never given me any reason to change. So by default we use Canon™ equipment now. Everything from a 40D up to a 1DsMIII. In case your wondering, the smaller frame sizes are useful at times for longer reach.

I should also point out that it is generally much harder to take a good picture with a good camera, than it is to take a good picture with a lesser camera.

Lenses. Simply Canon™ again. L series lenses are unrivalled in my opinion, the only serious competitor being Nikkor, but there is no point mixing and matching when there is no need to. Strangely for years I always wanted a Nikon™, but that was in the mid eighties when it was almost ubiquitos to see the National Geographic photographer with a Nikon™ slung around his or her neck. In the end I saved up and got a good deal on a Canon™ A1 and since then have never looked back.

Sadly it is too easy to get into the religious wars over which brand, while forgetting that a good photographer can still do amazing things with a pin hole camera.

Laptops. Sony™ Well I just like them. Plus the monitors are bright and they are cool.

Desktops. Anything and everything goes here. Same with OS's. Perhaps the only noteable thing here is plenty of backup storage. 10TB at last count.

Monitors. Eizo™, pretty much the industry standard. Same with Adobe™ software. We also do additional calibrations with Spyder3™

Network. Of course pumping out lots of images eats up bandwidth very fast. Our servers are on Sago Networks. Again not a recommendation as such, but they do what we need and have never had any real problems.

Of course there is much more to it. In fact the amount of kit required for even modest photography can get out of hand. Still that is the stuff people seem to ask. As mentioned though good gear certainly helps, but it is not all of the answer. We also have plenty of ancillary gear, everything from climbing ropes to BCD's for diving and plenty of stuff in between. That means we can operate anywhere in the world in pretty much all conditions.
